Why it all started...
Handcycling Association Singapore (HAS) is a non-profit national sport association. It is dedicated to the development of disabled athletes by promoting handcycle racing as a professional sport, and handcycling in general for recreational purposes. The association has taken active leadership role to foster and prepare teams to participate in local and international competitions.
Handcycling as a sport is ideal for people who have no or limited use of their legs, people with poor balance, or anyone who is able-bodied who wants to try a unique challenging sport.  A handcycle however expensive, is a great piece of adaptive equipment that allows people to get outdoors and be active. Handcycling itself breaks barriers which allow an integration of differently disable and able-bodied riders to participate in cycling with friends and families.
Handcycling began as an informal get-together by members of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group Singapore (SCISG) on Saturday mornings to handcycle at Yio Chu Kang Stadium in early 2007. This support group is started and owned by survivors of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and the rehab professionals in Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre in Singapore with the primary focus and attention centers on the physical activity of handcycling. This group of disabled sports enthusiasts that have been frequently meeting to keep fit by handcycling at HAS new permanent home at ITE College East in Simei. Handcycling has since provided this group of SCI survivors with an avenue to not only encourage each other in the recovery process, but also a motivation as they have the opportunity to stretch their physical capabilities and aim for a complete “recovery” as possible.
Handcycling is now a sport that is recognized and a medal event in the Paralympics. It is also a form of alternative physiotherapy for individuals who are undergoing physiotherapy in local hospitals and are recovering from psycho-motor disabilities. It has been proven to be an effective form of rehabilitation for individuals suffering from either permanent disabilities or otherwise (e.g.. stroke patients). In September 2007, two newly spinal cord injured handcyclists participated in the inaugural Aviva Ironman 70.3 Triathlon (Bike Leg), with one completing the grueling 90.1km distance and the other achieving an impressive 20km given his severe disability. These handcyclists have been taken part in various local team relay triathlons like the OSIM International Triathlons and the Aviva Ironman 70.3 ever since!
The Handcycling Association Singapore (HAS) is being supported by ITE College East, Inspirar of Singapore Management University (SMU) and The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC)
